Parenting Versus Puppy Owning

by The Daddy on May 25, 2011

We’ve heard this one a few times. The Daddy is actually pretty good about keeping the comments to himself, but every now and then, for those paying attention (or “in the know” to The Daddy’s brand of sly humor), some subtle ninja jabs can slip on by, usually unbeknownst to the excited new puppy “parent.” This comic was just a fun way to say it out loud.

When we got our dog, we had considered getting a puppy, even though that’s something I never thought I’d do in my life. The dog we did end up getting was only just barely out of puppyhood, but still quite a handful. We’re still glad we made the right choice to this day.

But you’re out of your freaking mind if you think it’s ANYthing like having a child. ‘Nuff said.

I’m usually pretty good about keeping my comments to myself when people compare pet ownership to parenting. Yes, it’s a responsibility, but parenting’s a whole different level of responsibility. You can put your puppy in a crate in the kitchen with some dry food, a bowl of water and some newspapers and go have dinner out. If you do the same with a baby, you should expect a visit from Child Protective Services real soon!

Exactly. I would NEVER leave dry food in the puppy crate with the kid, I always put a bottle of milk in there as well. I’ll also leave a book or two, in case he gets bored with the newspapers.

I found having dogs (two of them, adult greyhounds rescued from the racetrack) about equally as tough as having a baby. Yeah, the dogs slept through the night, but you can’t take dogs with you on errands. And don’t even get me started on having to walk them… (“Oh NOW you need to go out. Of course, because it’s 11PM, 56 degress, and RAINING.”)

Thanks for that clarification and the comments, too. I have twin boys and no dog. Never have had a dog so I’ve always been puzzled by the dog/child responsibility connection wondering if it is comparable.

I suppose that’s about the same as hearing people starting off with a plant as a way to gauge how they’ll be as a parent. I forget to water my plant for days…oh wait, maybe it is the same as parenting.
