As a parent, I do my fair share of complaining about sleep problems. Even though the Noodle has always been a pretty good sleeper, I’m sleep deprived and constantly exhausted, and have no problem complaining about it. Caffeine and brute force will are all that keep me upright some days, which seems, at this age, par for the course.
But I do have one area where having a kid has actually HELPED my sleep–falling asleep. It used to be that I’d lay in bed for anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours before falling asleep. That, my friends, is no more. Most nights, I’m asleep within 5, maybe 10 minutes. Some nights, I’m probably asleep within 2. There is the rare occasion where I’ll be super stressed and not able to sleep, but that’s rare now instead of the norm.
My old routine consisted of everything from deep breathing, counting backwards from 100, trying to daydream my way to sleep, or (the horribly ineffective for me) watching TV in bed until I was so exhausted I’d finally pass out. I always wondered how it would feel to just lay down and…fall asleep. Not have to convince my body that yes, you’re tired, now…sleep!
Now I know, and I have to say, it’s pretty awesome. I mean, yeah, it’s because I’m practically a walking zombie most days, but hey, at least I fall right asleep!
So, there is at least one bonus to compete exhaustion all the time.
Although, I think I’d trade that bonus to not be so damn tired all the time…
